Como Carne de Cañón
The book Como Carne de Cañón ("Like Cannon Fodder") by former
child star Judith Chávez-Parques ("Ga-Bí") exposes the exploitation of the Mexican
entertainment industry. On page 260 of the book, she reveals what she heard Andrés Puentes
say back in 1988 (soon after he met Tatiana) about his plans regarding her:
[translated from original Spanish]
Another thing that gave me reason to change my life was one night that
I went with Jorge Cobo to see the show of Amanda Miguel at
the "Andy Bridges" nightclub in the outskirts of Echegaray [a
Mexico City suburb], where the owner - Andrés Puentes - had
invited us to see the show of Amanda with Carlos Santos, the
promoter of Luis Miguel. After listening to the commentaries of
Puentes, I was convinced that I had to leave this atmosphere of
abuse and misery. Andrés finished breaking up with a youngster
whom he had mistreated before, as it was his "machista" custom,
and he began a relationship of "boyfriend of sweaty little hands"
with the youthful singer Tatiana who was lost in love with him
from the moment they met. The commentary of Andrés was:
- "Finally something fell in my net! Can you believe
it.. now the 'key' is Tatiana! Finally a 'vieja' [literally, 'old woman', but
used here as a disrespectful way of referring to a woman of any age] is going to
relieve me from having to work. Now I can close the nightclub.
And the truth is, good! because it is doing very poorly and will not stay
in business much longer."
- "Has that girl been paying attention to you?" asked my
manager in a mocking way.
- "Hell yes," answered Puentes. "Now, I will be maintained for
the rest of my life. I am going to turn into a professional
pimp of the artists who let me. Something like you are doing
with this 'vieja' that comes with you."
That was the drop that spilled the glass. No longer did I want to
continue "being exploited" nor "the vieja" of anybody. I was
disgusted with this empty and humiliating life.
